This event was organised for local and national policy-makers and influencers to find out more about how citizens, businesses and campaigners can make use of the data that is now being opened up to them. It also explored some of the barriers.

David Wilde
David Wilde has been CIO for Westminster City Council since 2008, where he is driving forward an exciting new IS strategy based on the principles of customer centric service delivery, a zero infrastructure technology environment and transformational change. Prior to that, 2004 – 2008, he was CIO at the London Borough of Waltham Forest, a period when the Council progressed from Poor to Excellent. This followed a period as Head of e-Business and Internal and Electronic Communications for the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM), where he was responsible for ICT strategy and service management, e-government and internal and electronic communications strategies and operations.
William Perrin
William Perrin is the Founder of Talk About Local, a community empowerment project that gives local people skills to create a community website that they own and run. Talk About Local is based on William’s experience with www.kingscrossenvironment.com in London’s Kings Cross where he was a founder member of his Safer Neighbourhood Panel and is a director of a local youth charity. Previously, William was a senior civil servant and Policy Advisor and Private Secretary to Prime Minister Tony Blair.
Emer Coleman
Emer Coleman is Assistant Chief Executive in Barnet Council on secondment to the Greater London Authority. Her work in the GLA includes leading on the London Datastore encouraging all public agencies in the capital to release their data into the public domain. Prior to moving to London in 2005 Emer worked in local government communications in Dublin having previously worked as a columnist and feature writer for a number of irish newpapers including the Irish Times, Irish Examiner and Sunday Times. Graduating with a degree in history and sociology she started her professional life as an arts administrator working variously as artistic director, theatre administrator, arts consultant and officer of the Irish Arts Council. She is currently completing her Masters in Public Administration at Warwick Business School.
Darren Johnson
Darren Johnson was elected to the London Assembly in May 2000 and has served as a Green councillor in Lewisham since 2002. As Chair of the Assembly’s Environment Committee, Darren has led Assembly investigations into a range of topics including: flood risk in London, water shortages, Heathrow expansion and the loss of London’s street trees. He has also promoted measures to address low-pay in the capital through a London Living wage and policies to protect vital local services.
Micheal Cross
Michael Cross is a freelance journalist specialising in public policy, particularly where it concerns technology, healthcare and the law. his work appears in The Guardian newspaper and in numerous specialist publications, including the British Medical Journal and the Law Society Gazette. He is co-creator of the 18th century cartoon scrivener Tobias Grubbe, whose observations appear every Monday at the Daily Telegraph. He was part of the launch team at the Independent newspaper, and spent two years as technology correspondent and general business, news and feature writer. Following three years as a correspondent in Japan, he returned to the UK and specialised in government IT, writing and broadcasting on such topics as e-government and the computerisation of the NHS. In 2006 he founded the Free our Data Campaign that ran in The Guardian newspaper.
